Co-ops & Facebook Groups
What Is a Homeschool Co-op?
A co-op (cooperative) is a group of homeschool families who come together regularly for shared learning experiences. Parents take turns teaching classes based on their skills and interests, and kids get structured social time with peers.
Co-ops vary widely:
- Academic co-ops β parents teach full classes (science labs, writing workshops, foreign language)
- Activity co-ops β focused on field trips, art, PE, and social events
- Tutorial co-ops β hire outside teachers for specific subjects
- Hybrid co-ops β meet 2-3 days per week with homework on off days
How to Find Co-ops in Texas
The best way to find co-ops is through Facebook groups. Seriously β this is where the homeschool community lives online. Search for your city or county + βhomeschoolβ and youβll find active groups with parents sharing co-op recommendations, class openings, and meetup invitations.
Facebook Groups We Recommend
- San Antonio Homeschoolers β active community for the SA metro area
- Texas Homeschooling 101 β statewide group, great for beginners
- Sociable Homeschoolers of San Antonio β focused on social events and activities in SA
Tips for Facebook Groups
- Introduce yourself when you join and mention that youβre new β the community is incredibly welcoming
- Search before you ask β many common questions have been answered before
- Be specific about your location β Texas is big, and local recommendations are most helpful
- Check the files/guides section β many groups maintain resource documents
Other Ways to Connect
- Texas Home School Coalition (THSC) β hosts an annual convention, regional events, and has a member directory
- Homeschool Feast β online community and resources
- Local libraries β many Texas libraries offer homeschool-specific programs and meetups
- Churches and community centers β often host homeschool co-ops and activities
Starting Your Own Group
If you canβt find a co-op that fits, start small:
- Post in a local homeschool Facebook group that youβre looking to meet up
- Start with a weekly park meetup or library visit
- As the group grows, organize activities or shared teaching
Some of the best co-ops started with two families meeting at a park.
